There are four dormitories – 2 for males and 2 for females.  Each dorm room has 3-6 bunk beds
There is one room in each building for our staff – to assist chaperones with dorm supervision
There is one room in each building for chaperones from our visiting schools for student supervision
There is no air conditioning – all rooms are equipped with fans

What if we have weak swimmers or non-swimmers in our group?
Upon your group’s arrival at Seacamp, all students and chaperones will participate in a Swim Evaluation. This is not a pass or fail swim test, but an opportunity for our staff to observe everyone’s comfort level in the water. All participants will swim approximately 30 feet along the surface of the water in about 15 feet of water in our swim canal. Only one student or chaperone will swim with their Instructor at one time.

If a student/chaperone is more comfortable going in the water with a personal flotation device (pfd), they will do the swim evaluation in a Type III pfd (similar to a water-ski vest/kayaking vest). In this case, they will have to wear the vest for all future water activities. If a student/chaperone is not comfortable doing the Swim Evaluation at all -they will wear a Type I PFD (provides additional flotation) at all times while on the boat and they will not be able to participate in some water-based activities. In either case, they will still see all the lessons and the critters that everyone else collects and have a great time.

Snorkeling is basically just floating on the surface; if a student is comfortable with the doggie-paddle - our staff can typically work with them to get them comfortable snorkeling. Many of our snorkeling locations are in shallow water. All participants will wear a snorkel vest to provide additional flotation as well.

What if a member of our group has food allergies?
We can review the menu for your trip approximately 1-2 weeks prior to the trip. This will allow our food service staff to identify the items that the participant will be able to consume, and we will encourage the parents to send some additional food items that they know can be safely consumed. We eat family style in our dining hall and a planned menu will be established for your trip. We are not able to accommodate alternative diets.

Peanut allergies – Seacamp’s kitchen does not cook with any peanut oils or use peanuts in any of our menu items. Peanut butter is typically put on all tables at all meals, unless we know that we have a peanut allergy with a visiting group. We encourage teachers and parents to discuss the following three options, and NHMI staff will accommodate your choice during your trip:

1. If the allergy is not severe, we are often able to leave the peanut butter on the tables.
2. For minor to more severe allergies, we can opt to not put peanut butter on the tables where students will sit, but still put containers of peanut butter in the front of the dining hall for other students to eat during the meal.
3. In the event of a very severe allergy, the food service staff will not take the peanut butter out of the kitchen during the visit.

What is the NHMI policy regarding cell phone usage and other personal electronic equipment?
NHMI is not responsible for belongings lost or damaged during your trip. In order to ensure that students gain the most from their educational experience at NHMI, we ask that students and chaperones not use cell phones or other personal electronic equipment during programs or meals. In order to limit potential loss and damage, we discourage bringing any valuable items to NHMI. Each Head Chaperone is responsible for determining acceptable use of such items during their group’s free time on the property.

Will Internet access be available on site during our trip?
Seacamp does not have internet access available on site for visiting school groups.

What behaviors are unacceptable at Seacamp Association, Inc?
There are certain unfortunate discipline issues that the NHMI Director should always be made aware of should they occur with your group:

  • Students are not allowed to smoke cigarettes or use any form of tobacco product.
  • Coed social relationships are restricted to supervised programs and/or informal activities during free time in supervised areas. Failure to comply may result in students being sent home. Students must remain in their rooms after “lights out”.
  • Students may be sent home if they are out of their rooms after lights.
  • Bringing, possessing or using unlawful alcoholic beverages, weapons, narcotics or hallucinogens is strictly prohibited. Failure to comply or involvement in these activities subject students and chaperones to immediate dismissal.
  • Any form of bullying or harassment is prohibited at NHMI/Seacamp.

BOATS –(FLATTOPS)
The boats are designed with three foam-filled pontoons, dual engines, and have required Coast Guard safety equipment. The flat surface of the boats make them an excellent teaching platform and has easy access to water for snorkeling.
Type II PFD’s will be worn at all times when underway
Snorkel vests are worn anytime participants will be snorkeling

STAFF TRAINING AND CERTIFICATIONS
All program staff participate in a comprehensive training program prior to teaching any group.
Program staff are certified as American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguards which includes : First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Oxygen and AED Administration and receive training as a Skin Diver Leader. In addition, they also participate in a broad boating course  which includes seamanship and boat handling.
